The Columbia, TN based "Merchants of Cool" was formed in 2006 and had the band's first venue that summer in Mt. Pleasant, TN. Today our repertoire includes more than 260 songs of the 1930's and 40's and occasionally we may break into some modern pop and rock.
Our musicians are all volunteers and therefore come from all walks of life and professions. The love of this music and the desire to preserve it are common bonds among the members. The Merchants of COOL Big Band is a member of the American Big Band Preservation Society. The ABBPS is dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage of classic big band music, and to encouraging and educating new generations of big band listeners, players, composers, and arrangers.
The Big Band/Swing music is a style of jazz that originated in the United States. This is the music of the "Greatest Generation" and dominated popular music from the 1930s through the early 1950s. Some of the biggest stars of the Big Band era were Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Count Basie and Glenn Miller. We'll take you back in time as we perform music of these greats. Come out to one of our performances and listen as we play Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" followed by set after set of music of the Big Band Era that you'll never forget!
